The Ducati 888 Special Production Omologato (SPO) was a homologation special made for the U.S. market to conform to AMA Superbike racing rules in 1993 and 1994. Basically a european Ducati 888 Strada with a light weight solo tail section, It looked very similar to the bike Doug Pohlen won the 1992 and 1992 World Superbike championships and had an Ohlins rear shock, and carbon fiber front fender which the European Strada did not.  Over the two years these were available in the U.S. approximately 270 bikes were produced. As the seminal Ducati 916 broke cover in 1993 and were delivered to the rest of the world as 1994 models, the 888 SPO was a tough sell in the U.S.. 1994 SPOs were the same as 1993 SPOs except for the addition of a numbered limited edition plate on the upper triple tree. It was rumored that the ’94s were largely ’93 bikes re-registered as ’94 with number plates added to the upper triple tree. It was also rumored that the 916 overshadowed so significantly that all the bikes imported to the U.S. were not sold and the remaining inventory was ultimately brought back to Europe and sold so these bike ultimately are quite rare.

This bike is a 1993 model. It has been upgraded with Brembo cast iron rotors, Marchesini magnesium wheels, V2 “G” grind cams, high compression pistons, spaghetti exhaust and custom tuned by Doug Lofgren.  Vortex adjustable clip ons and Brembo front brake and clutch remote reservoir master cylinder have been added to make the bike more comfortable to ride. All stock parts are stored so the bike can be returned to stock appearance when this bike is dry stored and put on static display.
